The Lakehead Women’s Championship Cup was held at The Hangar on Saturday.

THUNDER BAY – Five women’s soccer teams took to the field Saturday evening to raise money for a good cause.

Two teams from the Lakehead Thunderwolves club program welcomed Thunder Bay Chill, Superior Rush FC and the Confederation College Thunderhawks to the Hangar for the Lakehead Women’s Championship Cup.

Although bragging rights were on the line, the main goal of the event was to raise money for the Faye Peterson House women’s shelter.

“It’s truly a blessing to be able to raise money for them,” Thunderwolves team captain Hannah Keesic said.

“I actually do outreach work with NorthWind Family Ministries and we sometimes have clients who also stay at Faye Peterson House. It’s an amazing organization and does so much for women.

As of Monday morning, the tournament had raised $1,480, surpassing the initial goal of $1,000.

Thunderwolves head coach Anna MacLean said that in addition to supporting the Faye Peterson House, one of the goals of the event was to raise awareness of what the organization does.

“I think it’s a great thing to support and they do a lot of great things for the community,” MacLean said.

“We want to help them so they can continue to do everything they do here in Thunder Bay.” »

Saturday’s tournament also marked the first time the Thunderwolves club team hosted a multi-team competition outside of their annual Christmas event.

The team regularly plays Monday nights at the Thunder Bay Tournament Center in local league games and has also ventured to southern Ontario for games.

“We love to compete,” Keesic said. “It’s very intense and we love being able to get all these women’s soccer teams together to come together and have a good time.”

MacLean said the program would like to continue to grow the event and help other causes in the future.

“We don’t have a lot of tournaments in Thunder Bay, so I think it’s great to create this environment to promote women’s soccer,” MacLean added.

“We will look back at how things went this weekend and see what we can improve for next time.”
