Mount Dukono in Indonesia’s northern Moluccas erupts, flight warning issued – World

JAKARTA – Mount Dukono, located in Indonesia’s North Moluccas province, erupted on Tuesday, triggering an aviation warning, according to the country’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation.

The eruption occurred at 9:43 a.m. local time, sending a thick column of white to gray ash up to 4,600 meters into the sky. The ashes drift northwest of the mountain.

Planes were prohibited from flying at altitudes below 5 km around the volcano located on the island of Halmahera. An orange advisory from the Volcano Observatory regarding the status of aviation has been issued.

Climbers and residents are strictly prohibited from climbing or participating in any activities within a 3 km radius of the crater. Residents are also advised to always wear a face mask in case of ash scattering, as volcanic ash can spread at any time.

Mount Dukono, rising 1,087 meters above sea level, is one of Indonesia’s 127 active volcanoes.
