Israeli cabinet approves US-proposed Lebanon ceasefire plan – World

TEL AVIV, November 27. /TASS/. Israel has officially accepted the ceasefire plan in Lebanon proposed by the United States, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyuahu announced.

“This evening, the war cabinet approved the US proposal for a ceasefire in Lebanon. The decision was supported by ten ministers, with one against,” the prime minister’s office said.

He praised Washington’s contribution to the peace process, adding that Israel “retains its right to respond to any threat to its security.”

According to the Times of Israel, the only person to vote against it was Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. The minister, who is also leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, had previously criticized the ceasefire with Lebanon, calling it a “historic mistake.”

On Tuesday evening, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a special televised address that he would submit a plan for a ceasefire in Lebanon to the war cabinet. He said he was convinced that the military campaign against Hezbollah had set the group back decades in terms of military capabilities. Israeli forces killed Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrullah and other leaders and destroyed most of their weapons, thousands of fighters and key infrastructure, the prime minister said.

According to Netanyahu, Israel “will strictly respect the agreement and will respond harshly to any violations.” He said a ceasefire would give Israel a chance to focus on the Iranian threat, resupply weapons and rebuild its troops, and isolate remaining Hamas forces in Gaza.
