Jefferson Parish voters on Saturday rejected a property tax plan that would have funded pay raises for public school teachers and staff, a blow to the district’s efforts to compete with neighboring school districts for talents.

The Jefferson Parish School Board’s $10.89 tax would have raised an additional $48 million per year over the next ten years and would allow the district to increase the salaries of its certified teachers by $8,300.

The measure failed by just over 300 votes.

The new tax would have cost homeowners an additional $108.90 per year on every $100,000 of property value beyond the $75,000 homestead exemption. The owner of an exempt property valued at $320,000 would have had to pay an additional $266.81 per year.
