Redding Rancheria Raises Minimum Wage, Affecting 140 Employees

Many Redding Rancheria employees who make minimum wage are now receiving a raise. Effective Monday, December 9, the newly approved minimum wage is $21 per hour, which affects 140 Redding Rancheria workers.

This applies to their healthcare employees and all staff on these campuses, as well as their tribal government and Head Start employees.

Dani Hayward, Redding Rancheria’s senior director of human resources, said her team launched the initiative after learning of the minimum wage increase for healthcare workers in California.

“We are a sovereign nation and are not actually required to follow state-mandated regulations on wage changes, but because we put our employees first and want to remain a competitive employer in County Shasta, our tribal council has moved forward in approving this process,” Hayward said.

The tribe’s leadership team reviewed the minimum wage increase before the tribal council approved it. Tribal officials told Northstate’s News that some employees make $17.60 an hour to $21 an hour.

As for new hires, Hayward said, “We have an Indian preference here at Redding Rancheria, but we are open to all applicants. What we are looking for are qualified candidates who have a positive attitude, excellent work ethic and most importantly. it’s that they have compassion and dedication to serving others because that’s a big part of the tribe and what we do.

Hayward said there were currently a number of vacancies and she believed the new minimum wage would be a recruiting benefit.
