A 43-year-old man faces charges after almost 100 kangaroos were found dead near Singleton in the Hunter Valley on October 8. Police discovered the kangaroos along with spent ammunition and cartridges on Commonwealth land, New South Wales Police said.
The Hunter Rural Crime Prevention Team traced the suspected shooter to a residence in Williamtown and executed a search warrant Friday. Firearms that were not properly stored were discovered and several weapons were seized at a second Hunter Valley location, according to NSW Police.

The man was accused of aggravated animal crueltyshooting firearms in Commonwealth areas, trespassing and storing firearms offences. He has been released on bail and is due to appear in Raymond Terrace Court on January 13. His firearms license was suspended.
This incident follows other recent reports of animal cruelty in New South Wales. Police are investigating the deaths of 29 chickens at Corrimal High School in the Illawarra region, believed to have been killed on Friday evening. “It is clear that this was not the act of a fox or a wild cat. These chickens have been well cared for by the facility, and for someone to be able to do this is amazing,” said Inspector Allison Guthrie.
Two ducks were also killed at Murrumburrah High School on Thursday. “These animals were subjected to a horrific act of cruelty,” Acting Inspector Mark Lake said. “It’s clear that the ducks have been well cared for by the facility, and for someone to do this is incredible.”
Last month a 20-year-old man was charged with running over kangaroos with his vehicle near Lithgow in July. He is due to appear in Manly Local Court.
Police said none of the incidents were related.
