Jim Carrey’s experience at a 2000 classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas saw the actor “buried alive every day” and it almost caused him to abandon the film altogether.

They say that beauty is suffering and it is certainly so for Jim Carrey when it came to creating – well, maybe not the most beautiful – but certainly the best festive movie character of all time – at least in my opinion.

The hit sees Carrey take on the iconic role of the green, hairy – but ultimately hot-cheeked – hater who hates people (not really Christmas).

It’s one of the actor’s best-known and best-loved roles to date – even if it didn’t see him win an award on the criminal side. Oscar as a result – however, it was a character he almost walked away from completely.

During an appearance on The Graham Norton Show in 2014, Carrey spoke about his role in Ron Howard’s adaptation of the Dr. Seuss classic and why he turned to Howard at one point and told him he “couldn’t do the movie anymore” .

His decision to almost quit the role? Well, this was all because to get into character as the Grinch, Carrey would sit for 3.5 hours every day to transform himself into the ostracized Who.

The first day, the prosthetics and makeup even lasted nine hours. And Carrey revealed the experience “was like being buried alive every day.”

The actor even recalled putting his leg “through a wall” in his trailer due to being stuck and frustrated with his green outfit.

He added: “I told Ron Howard I couldn’t do the movie.”

However, the film’s producer, Brian Grazer, eventually found some sort of solution.

Grazer brought in a CIA agent who had experience training agents to resist torture – naturally.

Carrey then went through a series of lessons with the operator, learning “distraction techniques” to help him feel buried alive under all the greenery.

Carrey explained: “If you panic and head downstairs, turn on the TV, change the mode or ask someone you know to come and hit you in the head, kick you in the leg or smoke – smoke as much as possible. maybe you can.

The actor resolved, “That’s how I got through the Grinch.”

Well, prepare to have a whole new level of appreciation for Carrey when you watch the holiday favorite before Christmas this year.
