DU to introduce PhD in Hindu Studies from new academic session

Delhi University is set to introduce a doctorate program in Hindu studies from the academic session 2025-2026, as per a proposal by the Standing Committee. The recommendation for this initiative was made by the Board of Trustees of the Center for Hindu Studies. Originally scheduled for the current academic year, the launch of the program was postponed, according to the proposal. The introduction of this doctoral course aims to provide better academic opportunities to students, said Prerna Malhotra, co-director of the Center for Hindu Studies.

“Our Board of Trustees has recommended commencing a PhD in Hindu Studies, and the matter will be referred to the Academic Council. Students have contacted the Center to inquire about research opportunities, particularly those who are already qualified for the JRF and NET in Hindu Studies As a premier institution, Delhi University is committed to providing such opportunities and advancing research in various areas of Hindu Studies,” Malhotra told the agency. press release PTI.

Check eligibility criteria

The eligibility criteria for the PhD program will be as per the guidelines of the University of Delhi. Applicants must have a Master’s degree in Hindu Studies or related subjects with at least 55% marks, along with a JRF/NET qualification or passing the University’s PhD eligibility test . Relaxations applicable to reserved categories will be provided as specified in the Ph.D. Information Bulletin.

Until regular appointments are made, research supervision will be provided by faculty from the university’s departments and allied colleges who have expertise in Hindu studies and have expressed interest. Delhi University currently only offers a two-year master’s program in Hindu Studies. The Center for Hindu Studies, established in 2023 and focused on Brahmanical texts, began its first master’s class in November 2023.

Total number of seats expected

Initially, the Center for Hindu Studies can offer 10 seats, including those in the applicable reservation and supernumerary categories. The number of seats may increase in the future depending on the Centre’s infrastructure and academic requirements, the proposal states. The DU Academic Council will review and decide on the recommendation at its Dec. 27 meeting. Once the Council approves the recommendation, the proposal will be presented for approval to the Executive Council, the highest decision-making body of the university.
