International travel returned to pre-pandemic levels in 2024, leading to longer queues, higher costs and, of course, more delays. Fortunately for those traveling to and from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, these delays seem less likely, as the airport was recently named one of the world’s 10 most on-time airports in 2024.

A recently released study compiled by aviation analytics firm Cirium found that Detroit Metropolitan Airport was the eighth most on-time airport in the world, with 82.06 percent of flights departing within 15 minutes of the hour planned. Cirium tracked 289,259 metro Detroit flights last year, spread across 129 different routes.

Only four U.S.-based airports ranked in the top 10 in Cirium’s study, with Salt Lake City International Airport, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport also making part of the top 10.

“2024 has been a challenging year for airlines, facing large-scale IT outage and unusual and extreme weather,” said Jeremy Bowen, CEO of Cirium. “Despite these challenges, these airlines and airports have worked tirelessly to ensure their customers have a smooth journey and reach their destinations on time.”

The 10 most punctual airports in the world in 2024 were:

  2. Lima Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM)
  3. Mexico City Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX)
  4. Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC)
  5. Arturo Merino Benitez Santiago International Airport (SCL)
  6. Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP)
  7. Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD)
  8. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW)
  9. Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL)
  10. Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH)

When it comes to the most reliable airlines, it’s no surprise that only two U.S.-based airlines finish in the top 10 in terms of on-time performance. Delta finished in third place, while United Airlines was in tenth place. Delta’s on-time arrival rate was 83.46%, while United’s was 80.93%.
