A world-famous artist called Mr. Doodle is embroiled in a city council dispute over his plans to build an “original” seaside home inspired by his work on a picturesque beach.

Sam Cox, 28, has submitted an application for planning permission to build a unique detached property in Dungeness, Kent, known as ‘Britain’s only desert’.

Computer-generated images show how the house designed by Mr Cox would be surrounded by a rusty metal exterior that would be laser-cut with scribbles.

But some neighbors and the local council opposed the proposal, saying the new house would not be in keeping with the historic character of the area.

Lydd Borough Council said the metal façade “would not be consistent with the historic value of Dungeness” and could “impact on the environmental value of the area”, which is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) .

It also raised concerns that wildlife could get stuck in the squiggles and that an increased number of visitors visiting the house could have a negative impact on traffic.

Architect Guy Hollaway, who designed the house with the renowned artist and internet sensation, defended the appearance.

He says the scribbles are “visually subtle” and everything has been carefully selected to “blend into the landscape”.

He said: “Dungeness Beach has many rusty metal features which are part of its unique landscape, such as disused train tracks and metal structures.

“We are proposing to clad the building in corten steel, a rusty metal, which will blend into the landscape.

“The doodle-shaped openings are quite small and of a similar scale to the corten façade openings we designed for Pobble House (also in Dungeness).

“We completed Pobble House about ten years ago and there have been no problems with wildlife being caught inside the facade.

“So we would envisage that this facade would function in the same way and it would not be a problem.”

If approved, the three-bedroom single-storey house would replace a bungalow already on the site and would be built on the same area.

Two historic railway carriages are incorporated into the building which will be carefully dismantled and restored by a specialist carpenter off-site to its original condition.

They will then be returned to their original position where they will be waterproofed, insulated and “clad with a scribble-shaped embossed metal outer skin”.

He added: “The wagons are currently clad in white wood and completely unrecognizable as wagons. Our proposal is to celebrate the shape of the wagons by covering them so you can see their shape and character which is currently completely lost.

“We carefully designed the house to reflect the local vernacular in its form and materiality; the architecture will therefore blend into the landscape and the surrounding context.

“Scribbles are visually subtle and only recognizable when viewed up close.

“This is a home for our guests that will be unobtrusive and part of the backdrop of Dungeness.”

The larger car will be transformed into the house’s kitchen to allow for a more functional space while the second car will be used as an office.

The proposal also introduces solar panels, hidden behind the screened facade to maximize solar energy without affecting the view of neighboring properties.

An air source heat pump and underfloor heating will also maximize the efficiency of the home.

Documents submitted to Folkestone and Hythe District Council (FHDC) by Hollaway Studio state: “The contemporary proposal is in keeping with the original, independent character of Dungeness whilst the release of the carriages and chosen material palette maintains a respect and an empathy for the established historical vernacular.

The fate of the house will be decided this month by the FHDC planning committee.

Mr. Doodle began gaining recognition in the art world in 2015 and has since seen growing interest in his work.

He was said to be at the forefront of a “new artistic wave”, taking the online art community by storm with millions of people following on social media.

He had previously decorated a 12-room mansion in Tenterden, Kent, entirely in black and white doodles, both inside and out.
