Stop the political games over the NOLA terrorist attack

representative Troy Carter (D-LA) criticized Republican leaders for playing “political games” following the deadly terrorist attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day.

Recently, President-elect Donald Trump blamed the attack about “criminals entering” the country while also claiming that the “fake media” ignored his warnings about border security. New Orleans attack suspect Shamsud-Din Jabbarwas a United States citizen born in Texas and had previously served in the Army Reserves.

During Thursday’s CNN interview, the anchor Brianna Keilar asked Carter what he thought of Trump’s recent remarks about “open borders.” Carter, whose district covers greater New Orleans, noted that the victims of the attack “deserve better” and called on leaders to be “more mature.” Carter added:

Brianna, it is unfortunate that the President-elect and Speaker Johnson have chosen to make this a partisan issue. This is an American attack. This is an attack on our democracy. This is an attack on our freedoms. This person was radicalized, but he was a United States citizen, a Texas citizen, and a person honorably discharged from the United States military. And we shouldn’t play games with the American people to try to imply that this is something that isn’t, which somehow suggests that this is a Democratic or a Republican issue. And we must be more mature, more direct, more fair and more honest with the American people. This is not the time for brinkmanship or political gamesmanship.

This is the time when we must stand united as Americans to fight terrorism, combat terrorist threats, and demonstrate to the American people that we will use every resource at our disposal to combat these kinds of hateful and heinous acts. . No time for political games. Is it a deception to somehow suggest that one party or the other might be responsible? The families of deceased loved ones and those in the hospital fighting for their lives, as well as our law enforcement officers at the federal, local and state levels deserve better. And I would call on all of our leaders to stand firm and recognize that we are Americans and we are better than this.
