The Superman trailer raised an interesting question that I think the Creature Commandos finale answered

In a short time, James Gunn and Peter Safran obtained their DC universe (or DCU) operational. Yes, the threads of the narrative they tell go back to Gunn’s work on both The suicide squad And Peacemakerwhich will continue in the coming Peacemaker Season 2. But things officially kicked off in 2024 with Creature Commandosthe animated series available with a Max subscriptionand will continue this summer when Gunn’s DC feature film Superman explodes in theaters. From what we understand, these stories are independent, and you don’t need to see them all to understand what’s happening in any one of them. However, I think there will be connections between the stories, and I think one of them appeared in Creature Commandos.

For most of his season, Creature Commandos dealt with an assassination attempt against Princess Ilana Rostovic (Maria Bakalova), heir to the throne of the fictional country Pokolistan. Originally, Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) forms a team to stop the witch Circe (Anya Chalotra) and save the princess. By the season finaleThe Bride (Indira Varma) discovered that Rostovic was the threat all this time and had been pulling strings to launch a plan that would have allowed Pokolistan to defeat the DCU heroes and take over the planet.

The bride stops Ilana Rostovic by putting a bullet in her brain. But that doesn’t completely stop Pokolistan’s plan to take over the world with the army of robotic guards the nation has. If anything, The Bride’s actions create a power vacuum in this fictional country, likely leading to more conflict in the region.

Which brings me to Superman and the first trailer we received for James Gunn. next DC movie. Looking at these images, I’m trying to understand tone, especially in regards to how the world reacts to Superman. There are specific scenes where the audience is angry with Kal-El (David Corenswet), although we don’t know why. And in set photos, we saw one of the key members of the Creature Commandos, Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo), actually holds Superman back and supposedly brings him before a higher authority to answer for certain actions.

Could it be Amanda Waller, who we know Flag works for?

What would Superman do that annoys Waller? Well, that’s the bridge I think I’ve found. Throughout the Superman trailer, we see a young boy calling for help from the Man of Steel. He raises what looks like a homemade flag with the Superman emblem on it. War rages around him and people flee for safety. And on one screen we see a report that troops from the fictional nation of Boravia are gathering at the border, due to an unseen conflict.

Does Boravia border Pokolistan?

Did things go wrong in Pokolistan after the Bride killed the Princess? Was there a takeover, and did this affect Boravia? I could easily imagine Superman getting involved in a conflict of this magnitude and then Waller send him the jerk, Rick Flag Sr.to apprehend the alien. For the following audiences Creature Commandosit would be a very cool nod for Gunn to continue the narrative of this series and let The Bride’s actions create ramifications for Superman to deal with. But for an occasional audience who comes Superman without any knowledge, it can be sold as an international conflict between fictional nations at war, and Superman got involved.

Fairly easy to swallow. And both audiences are satisfied.

As James Gunn said, it will not be imperative for the public to purchase a ticket for Superman having seen Creature Commandos. These are standalone stories that take place in the same universe. But Gunn too knows enough about worldbuilding to connect dots like this, so I’m willing to bet that the questions about Boravia and the military conflict surrounding this innocent young boy are answered in the death of Pokolistan’s leader, Ilana Rostovic, and that all these events from DC are somehow related. .

We will know for sure when Superman hits theaters July 11.
