A worker of the ruling TMC was killed and two others were injured when they were attacked during a road inauguration ceremony in Kaliachak in West Bengal’s Malda district on Tuesday.

Kolkata: A person was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the murder of a Trinamool Congress (TMC) worker in West Bengal’s Malda district, even as police are searching for the main accused in the case, who is still on the run.

“We have arrested one person in connection with the murder. The main accused is still at large. The search operation is underway,” said Pradeep Kumar Yadav, Malda district superintendent of police.

A worker of the ruling TMC was killed and two others were injured when they were attacked during a road inauguration ceremony in Kaliachak in Malda district on Tuesday.

Police said Hasa Sheikh died on the spot while TMC local unit chief Bakul Sheikh and his brother Esaruddin Sheikh were hospitalized.

“There were no shots. The victim was hit with stones and bricks,” Yadav said.

Police said the arrested accused, Amir Hamza, 24, is a close aide of Zakir Sheikh, the main accused. Zakir is also a TMC employee.

“Zakir has a criminal record. We launched a search operation. Sniffer dogs and drones were used. The area has large mango orchards and other plantations,” said an officer.
