Former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh has received a contract offer from the San Francisco 49ers to become the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the NFL, according to Matt Barrows of The Athletic.

This news was reported on Friday in the latest edition of The TK show with Tim Kawakami from The San Francisco Standard (3:30 p.m.).

“I think it’s become clear now that it’s Saleh or bust, because they haven’t done much work with anyone else yet,” Barrows said.

“And I already heard that they told Saleh, you know, ‘We’ll make you the highest-paid defensive coordinator in the entire country if you sign with us.’ And now all we have to do is wait for Saleh.”

Barrows noted that Saleh receives “all kinds of head coaching attention,” so it’s certainly possible that he rejects the opportunity if he receives a head coaching offer.

Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reported that there was “a real buzz” Saleh landed the head coaching job with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Saleh spoke with the Las Vegas Raiders on Thursday, according to Ian Rapoport from the NFL Network. The Dallas Cowboys plan to interview Saleh on Monday, according to Jonathan Jones from CBS Sports.

So there’s plenty of buzz linking Saleh to three of the six open head coaching jobs in the NFL. However, there is a lot of competition for Saleh in these three concerts.

In Dallas, Pro Football Hall of Famer, former Cowboys star and current Colorado head coach Deion Sanders could be the choice. NFL Insider Ed Werder reported Thursday that he was told Sanders would “almost certainly” accept the job, assuming Cowboys owner Jerry Jones offers it.

In Jacksonville and Las Vegas, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, widely considered one of the best (if not the best) head coaching candidates, could be a choice.

Saleh could therefore find himself without a head coaching position during this cycle. However, it’s clear he would have a home in San Francisco, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2017-2020 before joining the Jets in 2021.

Barrows also reiterated that the 49ers made a “strong” and “high-end” offer to Saleh, so it doesn’t appear he will be out of a job for long.
