Egg prices forcing the local restaurant to make changes

“Two weeks ago, we were paying $ 30 for an egg box, which contains 15 dozen. In just two weeks, the price doubled at $ 100 for a box, “said Coke. “It’s unreal.”

Coker mentions that they use about 30 dozen eggs per week, and the increase in costs forced them to modify their restaurant operations.

“We cut two hours from our breakfast service because I was spending too much money trying to serve breakfast for our morning customers,” explains Coker. “Now we are opening at 7:30 am, which helps a little, but it’s always expensive. We have to adjust our prices to maintain the affordability. »»

Although the change in their hours helps at the moment, Coker warns that if the situation does not improve, they may have to implement permanent changes.

“We probably had to completely cut breakfast. We have been doing this for 26 years, so it’s really heartbreaking to see something as it happens. It’s like a family, ”recalls Coker. “Most of the time, when people enter, we already know what they are going to eat.”

Studies indicate that the cost of eggs has more than doubled since the summer of 2023 and the The United States Ministry of Agriculture expects prices to increase by more than 20% this year.
