Pieces that combine modern comfort and timeless style

“In 2025, we will see nods to traditional styles, with a sense of nostalgia for the good old days,” says designer Rebecca Ward. Despite ever-changing decorating trends, there has recently been a trend toward investing in timeless furniture that can outlast fleeting trends. “Expect ‘new heirloom pieces’: furniture that combines timeless craftsmanship with modern functionality,” says designer Sarah Hargrave.

Over the past few years, the concept of home has undergone a huge transition, with our living spaces suddenly becoming both our refuges and our workspaces. Furniture plays a key role in both functions, and Ward predicts that in 2025 the blending of modern and classic will continue. “Expect warm, familiar furnishings, blending together vintage appeal with modern functionality,” she says.

Furniture with curves and soft edges

Retro styles will continue to make a comeback in 2025, including furniture with curved edges. “The retro-inspired love for curves and soft edges is expanding, with the dominance of rounded sofas, bubble-shaped chairs and tables with rounded corners,” says Clendenon. She explains that soft curves and edges create a welcoming, flowing look that contrasts well with more structured decor. There is a calming quality to the softness of curved lines, so this trend will lend itself perfectly to creating warm, welcoming spaces that soothe and refresh.

Sustainability

Sustainability has been a hot topic in most industries in recent years, and the interior design world is no exception. Looking ahead to 2025, “sustainability will remain a priority as we seek out materials from renewable resources, vintage and antiques,” says Ward. To furnish your home more sustainably, look for eco-friendly brands that source materials ethically and responsibly and manufacture pieces without using harmful chemicals. In addition, shop second hand and bring salvaged items, antiques and vintage pieces which not only support sustainability, but give a space unique character.

Emphasis on craftsmanship

“We also expect to see more hand-carved wood, woven details and unique hand-finished surfaces that create a one-of-a-kind feel, nodding to artisanal traditions,” Clendenon said. Hand-carved details and solid woods bring both a natural element, textural detail, and artisanal quality that instantly takes a space from generic to unique. When it comes to what types of wood will be popular in 2025, “look for contrasting wood stains: think a dark maple splashback paired with lighter walnut molding details,” says Hargrave.

When talking about rich furniture accents, Clendenon says touches of Art Deco will be popular in the coming year, especially in the form of metallics, geometric patterns and rich velvets. “This style adds a touch of glamor, perfect for accent chairs or bar carts, and gives a look that is both vintage and refined,” says Clendenon.

Furniture inspired by the 70s

When it comes to decades-inspired furniture trends, it seems you can expect the ’70s to have a big influence. “The ’70s will see a resurgence thanks to low-slung sofas, chunky shapes and earthy tones paired with bold patterns,” says Clendenon. She predicts that the furniture will carry a 70s influence in the form of layered textures, mixed materials such as leather and rattan, and high pile coverings.

Wingback chairs

One iconic piece that designers expect to become popular again is the wingback chair. “The wingback chair is poised to make a comeback as a favorite accent chair in living rooms and home offices, providing a comfortable and secure feel,” says Ward. The wingback chair dates back to the 1600s, and although it has undergone some stylistic changes, its essence has remained the same: it is a comfortable yet majestic chair with a high back and wing-shaped sides, and the perfect piece for an empty or elegant corner home office.
