Experts warn that a popular phone case trend could actually damage your device and cost you money.

Phones have evolved beyond their role as communication devices, to become fashionable accessories, especially for younger generations.

However, experts from Compare and recycle warned that some of them TikTokTrendy phone accessories could hurt the resale value of your phone if they cause damage. One of them is the popular trend of lip gloss phone cases.

Inspired by Hailey Bieber’s Rhode beauty brand, the trend features phone cases designed with a built-in groove to hold lip gloss. A TikTok clip showing this design has garnered over a million views, with comments including “I need this” and “obsessed.”

Despite the hype, experts question whether these cases provide enough protection for your device.

Experts Warn Against TikTok’s Lip Gloss Phone Case Trend

Compare and Recycle warned that incorporating a lip gloss compartment compromises the durability of the case. “Adding a lip gloss compartment compromises the structure of the case, often creating thinner or weaker areas to make room for storage,” they explained.

“The design sacrifices protective materials and shock-absorbing elements to accommodate the lip gloss holder, so the phone is more vulnerable to damage from drops or impacts, especially from the compartment side.”

Additionally, liquid or cream lip glosses could leak or smear on the phone, potentially affecting sensitive areas such as buttons, ports, or speakers. Over time, this could cause functionality issues and reduce the value of the phone if you plan to sell or trade it in.

“The average difference in resale value between a working smartphone and a broken smartphone is £140 ($175),” they added. “So, it can cost you a lot of money if you opt for phone accessories that could damage your device.”

While these lip gloss phone cases may be practical and stylish, they often fail to provide the necessary protection for your device. For better safety, experts recommend opting for a durable, high-quality phone case and using a separate cosmetic pouch for your lip gloss.
