Coin expert urges Brits to check their 2p as they could be worth £1,000 | United Kingdom | News

A coin expert has urged Britons to check their change as your tiny 2p coin could be worth a whopping £1,000.

Take to TikTok, lecoincollectorukwho has more than 160,000 followers, advised those with 2p coins in their currency to check if they carry two very special signs which could mean the small bronze coins are of great value.

One requirement is that the 2p coin must be marked “New Pence” on the front, while on the reverse it must be dated 1983.

Thecoincollectoruk said: “What you want to check on your 2p coin is when you turn it over if it has the date 1983 on it and on the front of the coin it also says ‘New Pence’.

In 1983, the Royal Mint accidentally minted New Pence coins bearing the date 1983.

He said: “Between 1971 and 1981, the Royal Mint minted twopence coins to celebrate the introduction of the new 2p. These were minted in the millions, even hundreds of millions in some cases.

However, your chances of finding such a special piece are slim as “it is believed that there are less than a thousand that can actually be found.”

The coin expert added: “The 1983 version has only been found in certain sets and it is believed that there are less than a thousand that can actually be found.

“The average selling price of one of these at auction tends to be around £800-£1,000.”

The coin expert advises those lucky enough to find the special 2p coin to sell it at auction.
