A family celebrates their own Christmas miracle after a father is “brought back from the dead” thanks to his quick-witted sister-in-law. Susan Howarth, 55, sprung into action when her brother-in-law Malcolm Yale suddenly collapsed after clutching his chest in agony.

The 61-year-old had suffered a massive heart attack and would have died without the efforts of Susan and her daughter Danielle, who performed CPR for 10 minutes while waiting for paramedics to arrive. The incident happened at Malcolm’s house in Racing corn on Dec. 10, shortly after Susan’s sister Julie texted her saying her husband was having chest pains.

Suzanne, a TESCO worker of Widthssaid: “I said ‘call an ambulance’, so she called the ambulance, and in the meantime my daughter said we had to go. When we got to Julie’s house they said the ambulance was going to take about an hour.

“We must have been there for about 15 minutes. I could see Malcolm clutching his chest. I said to Julie ‘call the ambulance again’, and the words had just left my mouth when he suddenly went into cardiac arrest in front of we. He I just went limp. I just looked at him and his whole body collapsed and his head fell off.

Luckily, the mother of three had first aid training while working as a carer and knew exactly what to do. She said: “I jumped off the sofa, pulled Malcolm to the floor and started CPR on him. I walked for about six minutes before I started to weaken. My daughter n “I’d never done CPR before, but she did it for a minute and let me do it.” my breath was caught. Meanwhile, Julie was on the phone to 999 and they were giving us instructions on what to do.

“We heard the sirens in the background; the paramedics came and told me to continue what I was doing while they got set up. They applied the CPR machine and after that they shocked him seven times and applied adrenaline to him. He was practically dead on the ground for about half an hour.

Father-of-one Malcolm was taken to Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool, where he had a stent placed in his heart. Amazingly, he was allowed to return home just five days after his brush with death.

He said: “The last thing I remember is I was sitting on the sofa, and then I collapsed. I remember little bits of it. I remember falling into the room, I remember pulling up outside the hospital, and that was it.

“I’ve been lucky. I can’t thank everyone enough for what they’ve done for me. Everyone involved has been incredible.”

Danielle also performed CPR on her uncle after he collapsed.

Julie, 52, said: “Malcolm and I owe everything to Susan and Danielle because without their quick thinking he wouldn’t be here today. At one point Malcolm was choking and Susan had to deliver him and clear his airways.

“We owe a lot to Susan, Danielle and the team at the hospital because without them we wouldn’t be here now. We can’t thank everyone enough for what they have done.”

Susan is now urging everyone she knows to get first aid and CPR training, in the hope of saving more lives. She said: “If I hadn’t known CPR it would have been another death. I think CPR should be taught in high schools. I should be a basic lesson. If Malcolm hadn’t been given CPR, he wouldn’t be. here today. We would have organized his funeral instead of looking forward to Christmas.
