Luke Williams | We did not maintain our levels and it cost us

Head coach Luke Williams felt Swansea City paid for lowering their concentration and intensity levels during their draw against Portsmouth.

The Swans had come into the game on the back of three wins from five games, but fell 2-0 down when Matt Ritchie converted a cross from close range and Josh Murphy scored a low strike.

The hosts got one back before the break when Liam Cullen’s superb cross forced Connor Ogilvie into his own net.

The Wales international then equalized for the Swans early in the second half, and he, Jisung Eom and Florian Bianchini were unable to convert their chances to complete the turnaround and seal the victory, but it was only not been the case.

“If we had created a lot of chances, but only scored two goals and won, we would be very happy,” the Swans coach said.

“But that wasn’t the problem, the problem we gave ourselves was that we gave ourselves a two-goal deficit to overcome.

“We should be able to score two goals at home and win a game comfortably. We were good defensively, but if you don’t maintain your concentration level and play with the intensity and aggressiveness levels, it can be a big problem.

“There are no excuses, they are professional players, they are exceptional at their best and we have to bring that every week.

“I’m impressed with the resilience of the group to come back, but there are times where we let ourselves down with the way we approached the game, or with the periods of play, and today we started badly the match and we paid for it.”
