What to expect from the inauguration in Washington?

With the president-elect Donald Trump ready to be sworn in again in about a week, Washington, D.C.prepares for the event.

During a inauguration ceremony At the U.S. Capitol, Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance will take the oath of office, kicking off their new administration.

What is the timeline of the day?

The 20th Amendment specifies that the mandate of each elected official president begins at noon on January 20 of the year following the election. Every president-elect takes the oath of office before assuming the duties of his office.

The timeline of these events usually begins at 6 a.m. with the security check. The musical performances will begin around 9:30 a.m. and the opening speech of the inauguration ceremony will begin at 11:30 a.m.

On January 20 at 12:01 p.m., Trump will once again become President of the United States.

The traditional inauguration luncheon will follow the investiture ceremony.

During former President Jimmy Carter’s inauguration, he started the tradition of walking down Pennsylvania Avenue to the White House for an inaugural parade. Trump should do the same. The parade will begin at the U.S. Capitol and proceed up Pennsylvania Avenue NW toward the White House. THE Presidential Inaugural Committee There will be tickets available for the stands, but the parade is generally free and can be watched from the sidewalk.

The parade is expected to begin around 2:30 p.m. The parade route will begin at 3rd Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, near the Canadian Embassy.

There will also be a number of official and unofficial inaugural balls, some of which Trump is likely to attend. The exact number changes from year to year, but the year 2025 sanctioned Presidential Inaugural Ball will take place at 8 p.m. at the Walter Reed Convention Center.

Which roads will be closed? Will the metro or other public transport be broken?

THE majority of roads in downtown Washington, DC and Capitol Hill will be closed to regular traffic from January 18-21 as the Secret Service works to secure the area.

Closures of note include:

• L’Enfant Plaza, from Independence Avenue, SW to the Hilton Washington hotel entrance.

• New York Avenue, from 18th Street NW to 11th Street NW

• 17th Street, from K Street, NW to Independence Avenue, SW

• Connecticut Avenue, from I Street, NW to H Street, NW.

• 16th Street, from K Street, NW to H Street, NW.

• Vermont Avenue, from I Street, NW to H Street, NW.

Some motorway exits will also be closed, including:

• I-395 eastbound, Exit 1 toward 14th Street/National Mall

• I-395 HOV exit eastbound toward 14th Street/National Mall.

• I-395 eastbound, Exit 3 toward 12th Street Freeway.

• I-395 eastbound, Exit 4 toward Maine Avenue.

• I-395 northbound toward C Street SW/US Capitol/3rd Street Tunnel.

• Westbound I-695 exit toward I-395 North/3rd Street tunnel.

• South Capitol Street ramp northbound to I-1395 North/D Street, SW, with all traffic directed to I-395 South/Downtown/Richmond.

• I-395 westbound, exits 4A and 4B toward Maine Avenue, SW/12th Street, NW, with all traffic directed to I-395 South/Richmond.

• 3rd Street Tunnel/Southbound I-395 Entrance at 4th Street and New York Avenue, NE

• 3rd Street Tunnel/I-395 entrance southbound at 4th Street and Massachusetts Avenue, NE

• I-395 westbound, exit 5A to 7th Street, SW and 5B to 6th Street, SW

Bus lines 3F, 3Y, 11Y, 16E, 16Y, 38B, 31, 32, 33, 36, 42, 43, 52, 54, 59, 64, 70, 74, 79, 80, 96, D4, D6, D8, G8, L2, N6, P6, S2, S9, X2, X8, X9 will all be hijacked.

Metro has not announced which stations will be closed due to the inauguration. In 2017, Metro closed five stations. However, in 2021, due to increased concerns following the attack on the U.S. Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, Metro closed 13 stations. At that time, L’Enfant Plaza was the only station remaining open within walking distance of the Mall.

The Smithsonian also announced that its DC museums would be closed on January 20.

How can I get tickets to the inauguration?

The Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies ensures that a large portion of inauguration tickets are made available to the public.

These tickets are free, but tickets are very limited. Those wishing to attend will need to contact their local member of Congress for a ticket. Those interested can use Congress.gov to find their appropriate representative or senator to contact.

All major news networks, including ABC, CBS, CNN, CSPAN, Fox News, MSNBC, NBC and PBS, will broadcast the presidential inauguration and additional coverage.
