Arthur Smith reportedly withdrew from UNC coaching search

Arthur Smith will not be UNC’s next head coach as the team looks to replace Mack Brown after parting ways with him recently.

Smith withdrew from the coaching search as of this week, according to a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, according to Rapoport, “recently informed UNC that he should not be considered as a candidate.” Some thought he would return to his alma mater, but he remains determined to stay in the NFL ranks for now.

It is clear that the Tar Heels had Smith’s name on the rosterhowever, as he confirmed the school made preliminary contact with him after making the decision to fire Brown.

It will be interesting to see who ultimately takes over the top spot for the Tar Heels as the search continues, but at least one name has now been crossed off the list entirely.

There are a few potential early candidates whose names have emerged in the rumor mill, including Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann, who many project could take a bigger job sooner rather than later.

North Carolina will play its 6th consecutive bowl game to close out the 2024 season.
