Sometimes a supermoon occurs, making the moon appear larger and brighter as it gets closer to Earth. The term “supermoon”, first used by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979, became popular after three consecutive supermoons in 2016.

According to Space.com, although the difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon is subtle, a supermoon can be up to 30% brighter and 14% larger.

This year there was four consecutive supermoons from August to October, attracting the attention of many sky watchers.

In rare cases, a Blue Moon occurs, which is the second full moon in a calendar month. This happens because the moon cycle lasts about 29.5 days, slightly shorter than most months, where two full moons fall in the same month.

The last Blue Moon took place on August 19, 2024; the next one is scheduled for August 30, 2025.

Interestingly, a seasonal Blue Moon can also occur when there are four full moons in a season instead of the usual three. In this case, the third full moon is called the Blue Moon. The next seasonal Blue Moon will occur on May 20, 2027.
