Court orders data preservation | The star of the day

The International Criminal Court yesterday ordered the National Telecommunications Monitoring Center (NTMC) and the Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to ensure that no information relating to the mass uprising in July and August is suppressed and that all digital data is preserved.

The order was passed by a three-member bench of the court, headed by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Majumdar, following the filing of a petition.

Attorney General Muhammad Tajul Islam briefed reporters after the trial.

He said: “Data detailing incidents that occurred during the mass uprising, stored with the NTMC and BTRC, is automatically deleted after a certain period. »

“The court has asked the relevant authorities to ensure that this crucial data is kept separately as it may be required for judicial purposes in the future,” it added.

“The court also asked telecom operators and internet service providers to assist the ICT investigation agency in conducting a thorough investigation,” he added.

A court prosecutor told the Daily Star that data is usually stored on NTMC and BTRC servers for six months. After that, if the data is not retained, it is automatically deleted.

A request is made to the court to preserve the data within six months and the court, after considering the case, orders the competent authorities to preserve the data.
