Deepseek can be prohibited in the United States

Deepseek can be prohibited in the United States following a newly proposed law that could see people in the United States incurring significant fines or even prison times to use the technology developed in China.

The bill, tabled by Josh Hawley, a republican senator, aims to “prohibit American people from advancing artificial intelligence capacities within the People’s Republic of China and for other people”.

The proposed law would prevent the importation of “technology or intellectual property” developed in China, anyone violating the restrictions granted up to 20 years in prison. Individuals could also be sentenced to a fine up to $ 1 million, while for businesses, it could reach $ 100 million.

Although he does not mention Deepseek by name, he just arrives a week after Chinese AI became the most popular AI application, which makes American technological actions drop.

His sudden popularity has aroused concerns about security, privacy and ethics, including Deepseek’s inability to answer questions about subjects sensitive to the Chinese Communist Party.

Donald Trump, the American president, described the Chinese application as “alarm clock” for the American technology industry. The White House would assess the impacts of Deepseek on national security.

The American navy has already forbidden its members to use Deepseek for work or personal use tasks, while NASA has prohibited AI technology on the government’s devices and networks.

Several American states have also noted that they accept a deep ban. Texas has become the first to implement a ban on government devices.

“Texas will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to infiltrate the critical infrastructure of our State thanks to AI and social media applications to collect data,” said Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas. “Texas will continue to protect and defend our state against hostile foreign actors.”

Security experts have also warned that Deepseek could constitute an even greater threat to companies and governments than other applications belonging to Chinese such as Tiktok, as data is stored in servers in China.

“As indicated in their privacy policy, Deepseek is a shared cloud service managed in China with data stored in China – potentially introduce unknown risks to data confidentiality, compliance mandates and security checks,” said Bill Conner, former security advisor in the United States Government.
