Wanting Trump to fail to “root” against the United States

Senator John Fetterman (D-PA) said Sunday he supports the president-elect Donald Trump to succeed in his second term and chastised those who took a different stance as guilty of “rooting against the nation.”

During an interview with ABC Jonathan Karl broadcast Sunday on This week, Fettermann disagree with the vice president Kamala Harriswho said before the elections she believed Trump was a “fascist.”

The Pennsylvania Democrat said Carl that he disagreed with Trump on many major issues, but would not oppose him. The two men discussed Harris and Trump’s upcoming term in the following exchange:

KARL: Looking ahead, what do you find most optimistic about the Trump presidency and what scares you?

FETTERMAN: Well, I – it’s like I’ve been warning people like you to relax, you know, like the constant, you know, panic. It’s not useful. So, you know, pack some lunch. Pace yourself. Because he hasn’t even taken office yet.

KARL: Do you think he has the potential to become a good and successful president?

FETTERMAN: I hope so. I hope so, because I’m not picking on him. If you oppose the president, you oppose the nation. And I will never get to where I want a president to fail. So, country first. I know it feels like it’s become a bit of a cliché, but it turns out it’s true.
