Rowling’s original post read: “Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you please. Sleep with any consenting adult who will accept you. Live your best life in peace and security. But force women to quit their job for saying sex is real?”

Since that post, Rowling has been at the center of an online cultural battle that has seen she loses employeesfans and even close friends.

The famous stars of the Harry Potter film adaptations have even denounced the author’s comments. British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who played the main character in the film, wrote an open letter for the pro-LGBTQ organization, The Trevor Project in 2020, ripping Rowling’s position.

That same year, star of the series Emma Watson countered Rowling’s rhetoric on social media with a post that read: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned or told they are not who they say they are.”

“I want my trans followers to know that I and so many others around the world see, respect and love you for who you are,” Watson wrote in a later post.

Rowling has since responded to the cast, posting in 2024 that they can “keep their apologies.”

“Celebrities who have rallied behind a movement to erode women’s hard-won rights and used their platforms to encourage the transition of minors can keep their excuses for traumatized detransitioners and vulnerable women dependent on single-sex spaces,” she wrote.

Despite the backlash Rowling has received due to her stance, she has yet to back down from her stance.

I know and I loves trans people, but erasing the concept of gender removes the ability of many to meaningfully discuss their lives. It’s not hate to tell the truth.
