Truthout prepares to respond to Trump’s agenda with resistance at every turn

Dear Truth Community,

If you feel rage, discouragement, confusion, and deep fear today, you are not alone. We feel it too. We are heartbroken. In the face of Trump’s fascist agenda, we are desperately concerned for the most vulnerable among us, including our loved ones and everyone around the world. Truth community, and our minds are racing a million miles a minute trying to map out everything that needs to be done.

We need to give ourselves space to cry and feel our fear, feel our rage, and keep in mind the harsh truth that millions of real human lives are at stake. And at the same time, we need to get to work, to do take stock of our resources and prepare to fully commit to the movement.

Journalism is a pillar of this movement. Even though we are in shock, we muster all the energy we can to face what is coming, because we know that one of the most effective weapons against fascism is to publish the truth.

There are many terrifying elements to the Trump agenda, and we plan to dedicate ourselves to reporting in-depth on each of them and, most importantly, covering the movements that are resisting it. We also recognize that Trump poses a serious threat to journalism itself and that we need to take this seriously from the start.

After the election, the four of us sat down to have difficult but necessary conversations about Truth under a Trump presidency. How could we defend our publication against an avalanche of far-right lawsuits seeking to bankrupt us? How would we keep our journalists safe if they have to cover outbreaks of political violence or are targeted by authorities? How will we urgently produce the practical analysis, tools and movement coverage you need right now – breaking our normal routines to face a terrifying moment in the way that serves you best ?

It will be a difficult and scary four years producing journalism focused on social justice. We must offer information, strategies, liberating ideas, tools and solutions that spark movement with a force we have never had to do before. And at the same time, we desperately need to protect our ability to achieve this.

We know this is a very painful time and donations may understandably be the last thing on your mind. But we must seek your support, which is needed in a new and urgent way.

We promise we’ll shift gears to bring you truthful news that fights misinformation, vitriol, hatred and violence. We promise to publish analysis that meets the needs of the movements we all rely on to survive over the next four years, and even to build for the future. We promise to be responsive, to recognize you as members of our community with a vital stake and voice in this work.
