Updated Win/Loss Projections and FPI Bowl Odds from ESPN

Updated Win/Loss Projections and FPI Bowl Odds from ESPN

Georgia Tech was 5-2 just a few weeks ago, but a tough schedule combined with injuries to key players such as quarterback Haynes King and linebacker Kyle Efford, now puts the Yellow Jackets at 5-4 with three games remaining. Injured players have a chance to return, but the schedule isn’t going to get any easier. Two of the three remaining opponents on Georgia Tech’s schedule are currently ranked in the top five in the AP poll (No. 2 Georgia and No. 5 Miami). Getting to a bowl game won’t be easy and it might depend on whether or not Georgia Tech can beat NC State at home after facing the Hurricanes.

ESPN REIT is, however, confident in Georgia Tech’s ability to finish 6-6. After the loss to Virginia Tech, FPI’s updated projections still have Georgia Tech finishing with a 6-6 record and giving the Yellow Jackets an 84% chance of reaching six wins. That only gives them a 2.3% chance of winning against this schedule.

ESPN uses its FPI (Football Power Index) as an advanced analytical model to help examine matchups and predict outcomes. In ESPN’s own words: “FPI is a predictive scoring system designed to measure team strength and draft performance in the future. The ultimate goal of the FPI is not to rank teams 1 to 128; rather, it is to correctly predict the results of matches and seasons. If Vegas ever released the power rankings it uses to make its lines, they would probably look a lot like FPI. »

If Georgia Tech can secure six wins, it would be the first time since 2013-14 that the program has hosted bowl games in consecutive seasons.
