California Governor Gavin Newsom invites Donald Trump to come see the Los Angeles fires

California Governor Gavin Newsom sent a letter to President-elect Donald Trump on Friday, inviting him to come see for himself the effects of the wildfires in Los Angeles.

In the letter, Newsom invites Trump to come survey the damage, meet with first responders and displaced victims and thank firefighters and emergency personnel for their work.

“In the spirit of this great country, we must not politicize human tragedy or spread misinformation from the margins,” Newsom wrote. “Hundreds of thousands of Americans – displaced from their homes and worried about the future – deserve to see all of us working in their best interests to ensure rapid recovery and rebuilding.”

Trump, who will be inaugurated as president of the United States on January 20, has criticized Newsom’s handling of the disaster and spread misinformation about response efforts.

In a post on social media On Thursday, Trump claimed that water distribution problems during the fire response were linked to environmental policy decisions made earlier to balance the state’s water resources and protect endangered species.

Later that night, he told Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago club that he would “force” Newsom to make policy changes.

“But it’s very late because I think this is one of the greatest disasters in the history of our nation,” Trump said.

Newsom on Friday ordered an investigation into water pressure and distribution problems that hit responders earlier in the week.

“Although the water supply from local fire hydrants is not designed to suppress wildfires over large areas, the loss of water supply from fire hydrants has likely compromised efforts to protect some homes and evacuation corridors,” Newsom said.
