Jenna Fisher Reveals Why Amy Adams Almost Wasn’t Cast on ‘The Office’

Amy Adams Almost Wasn’t Cast on ‘The Office’ for a Surprising Reason, Jenna Fisher and Angela Kinsey Revealed on their podcast “Office Ladies” Wednesday. Adams appeared in the first season episode “Hot Girl”.

“In our original analysis of this episode, we mentioned that Amy Adams, who plays the handbag girl, Katy, was Mindy Kaling’s (writer and star of the episode) first choice for the role. But what we didn’t say was that Amy Adams wasn’t the first person to play the role,” Fisher explained.

Adams was “everyone’s first choice”, but “there was concern that Amy and I were too much alike”.

“And I guess one of the writers even said, ‘I’m sorry, we can’t cast her.’ She’s like Jenna 2.0.’ And so they got cold feet and they chose someone else,” Fisher continued. “But when that didn’t work out, they decided to choose Amy and just go with the fact that. she and I were similar because that wasn’t the idea behind the role in the first place.”

“We originally shot ‘Hot Girl’ for a whole day with a completely different actress as Katy. And unfortunately, she just wasn’t quite right for the role,” Fisher also said. “They had to let her go. We replaced her with Amy.

Ultimately, the role was meant to belong to Adams. “I remember when Amy came on set, she was so perfectly Katy. She improvises a lot, guys. We will come back to this. But many of his improvisations are taken into account. She just knew who this woman was,” Kinsey said.

The 2005 episode features Adams as Katy, aka “the purse girl,” a woman who tries to sell counterfeit bags in the Dunder Mifflin office — and must fend off the advances of male employees. Steve Carell even poked fun at “Jenna 2.0” comparisons on the show, when he referred to Katy as “Pam 6.0.”

You can listen to the entire episode on “Office Ladies”.
