A beautiful lake surrounded by the beauty of nature is actually the caldera of a supervolcano.
The Taupō volcano is a massive caldera (collapsed volcano) located under Lake Taupō on the northern northern island of New Zealand.
It is one of the most active and powerful volcanic systems on the earth, responsible for some of the greatest eruptions in history.
A supervolcan is a volcano that produces eruptions with a volcanic explosiveness (VEI) index of 8, ejecting more than 1,000 cubic kilometers of equipment.
Taupō eruptions have radically reshaped the landscape of New Zealand and affected the global climate. The entire Taupō Lake (616 km²) is the caldera of this solid volcano.
One of the main eruptions of the Taupō volcano is the Oruanui eruption, which occurred about 2500 years ago. It was the largest over 70,000 years. The volcano released 1,170 km³ of volcanic equipment (50x more than the Krakatoa eruption of 1883) and covered a large part of the northern island in the ashes and reshaped the land.
He created the Caldeira (volcanic crater) which then filled with water to form Lake Taupō.
Interestingly, Taupō is always an active volcano and is closely monitored by a group of scientists. More than 700 small earthquakes were recorded under Lake Taupō between 2022 and 2023, indicating the movement of the magma.
Geonet, New Zealand geological risks monitoring system, closely follows the activity for signs of potential eruptions. Although a major eruption is unlikely in the near future, Taupō is always classified as active and capable of future eruptions.
However, several travelers who visited the lake were fascinated by its beauty when they shared their experiences on the Tripadvisor forum.
A person commented: “We are lucky to be able to travel a lot, having seen many places over the years, and we feel comfortable saying that the Taupo lake is one of our favorite lakes (otherwise our favorite) in the world.
“It has a scale, a beauty, discs by the lake, a small but function of the functional lake, a fantastic fishing and just enough restaurants, hotels and activity to create a very special location to visit . “
A second person wrote: “Imagine a magnificent lake surrounded by breathtaking views and delicious restaurants waiting for you to explore.

A third user shared: “Being the benchmark of Tapo, the lake was very beautiful on the right water to swim with good trails, seats and viewpoints. Many motels, restaurants, shops, bushes, land and open places made it more attractive. »»
