Thiruvananthapuram: ‘Vahan’ software has increased fitness charges for heavy vehicles without the knowledge of the Motor Vehicles Department. Earlier, a fitness test for vehicles like trucks and buses cost ₹800 fee and ₹220 service fee, making a total of ₹1,020.

Unexpectedly, the software started charging an additional penalty of ₹250 even for vehicles whose validity had not expired. The government, which has the power to approve fee increases, did not authorize this increase. The problem is believed to be caused by a software error.
