Ohio Raises Minimum Wage Starting in January

PARKERSBURG, W.Va. (WTAP) – Ohio’s minimum wage will increase by 25 cents to $10.70 an hour.

The decision was taken to help mitigate the effect of inflation. Approximately 313,300 Ohioans will be directly or indirectly affected.

According to the Policy Matters Ohio press release, the Economic Policy Institute estimates that approximately 112,700 Ohioans paid less than $10.70 will receive a direct wage increase. 200,600 Ohioans paid slightly above minimum wage will likely see their wages increase.

The minimum wage for tipped workers will increase to $5.35. This is expected to have directed or projected indirect effects on the 97,700 Ohioans in tipped positions.

The adjustment will help 195,600 Ohio women and 117,400 men. The wage increase will benefit 226,100 white workers, 51,400 black workers, 16,900 Hispanic/Latino workers, 6,500 Asian workers, and 12,400 “other race/ethnicity” workers.

Nearly two thirds of the workers concerned are over 20 years old. Nearly one in ten children live in homes that will benefit from this increase.
