Latest Darragh storm: Millions urged to stay at home as red warning issued

Tens of thousands of people are currently without electricity At 06:00 GMT this morning, National Grid says properties in the West Midlands, East Midlands, South West and Wales are affected.

The strongest wind gusts so far have been recorded in Wales at 92 mph (146 km).

As we reported, a red warning, the most severe that can be issued by the Met Office, will remain in place until 11:00 GMT today for west and south Wales and the Bristol Channel coast.

Millions of people in parts of Wales and south-west England have already been was told to stay home due to a life-threatening warning.

Yesterday, three million people received an emergency alert on their phone via the government advising them to gather torches, a cell phone power pack and other essentials. This is the largest use of the UK alert system to date.
