After looking forward to purchasing the latest clothing collection from singer Harry Styles’ Pleasing brand, one fan was disappointed to see that almost everything was, in her opinion, absurdly overpriced.

What’s going on?

Fashion expert Charlotte Finn (@ccharlottefinn) posted a video on TikTok expressing his disappointment with the brand. Including screenshots of ads for the new collection, she points out that a tote bag was priced at $175 and a crewneck sweater was priced at $195. A pair of small pajama shorts was $85.

@ccharlottefinn #greenscreen Please note, this is just my opinion as someone with a fashion degree. I think these pieces are beautiful and probably high quality, but I take issue with the fact that the brand set a price with their consumer and exceeded it without explaining the added value. If they held a fashion show or launched the collection in a publication with background inspiration and an interview with the design team, it would be valid. #jokingharrystyles #pleasant #findyourfun #harrystyles #harrie #tpwk #hshq #harrystylesvids ♬ original sound – Charlotte Finn

“The prices of all these items are just mind-blowing,” she says.

One commenter echoed his opinion, saying: “I can’t justify this price. »

Other commenters called the prices “abhorrent” and “criminal.”

One criticized: “They wish it was luxury when in fact it’s glorified products.”

Why is this so disappointing?

What’s even worse than the prices, Charlotte adds, is that each ad seems intentionally vague, with no explanation as to why the prices are so high.

Looking at the tote bag, she said, “It doesn’t tell you anything about what the bag is actually made of, other than (the fact) that it has a front mesh pocket and leather straps. And it doesn’t contain any information on how it was made, where it was made, the ethics behind it, where the materials were made, nothing about a closed loop process (UN. closed loop process minimizes waste and environmental impact.)

Although this vague product description may seem better than doing misleading durability claims, many buyers simply consider it greenwashing by omission.

What factor would motivate you to pay more for a sustainable product?

Superior quality

A more trendy style

A greater environmental impact

I wouldn’t pay more

The fashion industry is criticized for its failure to achieve crucial sustainable development goals. From fast fashion to luxury brands, the clothing industry generates more 2 billion tons of pollution that warms the planet and 35% of ocean pollution microplastics.

The garment is the second most polluting industry after oil, according to The RoundUp, and 87% of materials used to make clothing end up in landfills.

Considering all of this, transparency in the clothing industry has never been more timely for informed purchasing. Yet most brands remain deliberately vague about their practices.

What are we doing to improve transparency in fashion?

More and more buyers are looking for transparency in their clothing, and some are even stopping buying new things as much as possible. Considering this, thrift stores and second-hand online markets have gained popularity.

Choose to buy second-hand or fix existing clothing, offers many advantages. Not only does this avoid generating a new carbon footprint, but it also prevents this garment from being burned or sitting in a dump. Perhaps most importantly, it keeps your money in your wallet so you can use it for something you really love – maybe, if those prices weren’t too much of a turnoff, a Harry Styles concert.
