A tribute to David Gergen

A tribute to David Gergen

Here is my sincere thanks to Dr. Katherine Gergen Barnett. I wanted to take a moment to express my gratitude to your father, David Gergen, and for his life’s remarkable accomplishments, including serving as a White House advisor to four U.S. presidents. His contributions to political discourse, media, and public service have had a profound impact on our society, inspiring countless people to thoughtfully engage in the democratic process.

David’s dedication to fostering cross-party understanding and collaboration exemplifies public leadership at its best. His wisdom, integrity and commitment to the common good left an indelible mark on many lives.

Thank you for sharing him with the world and for the love and support you have continually given him throughout his illustrious career. Please whisper in his ear that many of us here in New England love him! (Dan Sullivan, Plymouth)

Growing up on the wisdom of David Gergen, Katherine’s reflection on life, death, and her father’s advice helps us understand the importance of true public service. He was and still is a hero, and the kind of person we should all strive to be. May he rest in peace! (Paul)

I once ran into David Gergen at the Charles Hotel – I was going in and he was going out. My jaw dropped and I said something stupid like “Oh my God, you’re David Gergen!” He didn’t miss anything, he just stuck out his hand and said, “It’s very nice to meet you.” » Class act. Very, very intelligent. I miss his precise analyses. (Just the data2)

This news hit me hard. I have always admired David Gergen for his thoughtful and calm analysis. I thank him (and the family who supported him) for his service to all of us. And may his words inspire more people to give back to this great country, even in these difficult times. (LuvSTX)

I admired Dr. Gergen Barnett’s commentary on Boston Public Radio. I didn’t know she was the daughter of David Gergen, a man I have always revered. Sending compassionate thoughts to this remarkable family. (Dr. B)

My heart understands your feelings, especially since I followed the path you are now taking. The LBD is unpredictable and behaves like the tides, one day may be good and the next difficult. Thank you for sharing your father’s words and wisdom with us. I believe their words may change over time, but their wisdom remains. (vigdis)

Here it is: On service: “Even though life is currently horrible in the public sphere, there are still reasons to believe in our country and its leaders and to serve. The country has given us a lot and many people have been killed or lost their families for our country. We must salute those who are trying to change the country and who fought for our country. Young people going into national service – military, AmeriCorps, Teach for America – people like that are staying the course. There should be more people who can run (for elections) and contribute for a few years. » (kewcam)

Thank you so much for your wonderful writing and your lovely thoughts for your father. I have long believed that to create such clarity, understanding and gifting, it must be learned from generation to generation. Your family has them in spades. May your father’s last days be filled with peace. (Aquarius999)

We live in dark, uncertain days about what the Trump era has in store for us next. David Gergen’s words in this piece brought some comfort tonight. THANKS. (pq77)

How lucky was I to have attended a WBUR CitySpace event (weeks before COVID-19 officially appeared) where Mr. David Gergen held down the fort as keynote speaker, while Nick Burns (at then-Biden campaign foreign policy advisor) was delayed arriving from Logan Airport. He and the host had a most informative and enjoyable conversation. Totally engaging. … My heart breaks for the family – enjoy the good days as they are memories that will continue to enrich the heart. (BakerJenn)

Nice try, thanks to you and your father. I missed him so much when he stopped being a regular TV commentator, as he always had something thought-provoking to say, based on his vast knowledge and experience. Peace to Mr. Gergen and his family. Courage to all of us. (mcburns)
