Workers blocked the Dhaka-Tangail highway in Konabari area of Gazipur this morning, demanding the reopening of two factories closed last week.

Morshed Zaman, additional superintendent of industrial police, Gazipur, said workers from the two factories started their protest around 9:30 a.m., disrupting traffic on the highway.

The factories were declared closed indefinitely on December 18 under Section 13(1) of the Bangladesh Labor Act, 2006, as confirmed by police and factory workers.

Yesterday morning, workers gathered at the main entrance of the factories to demand their reopening. While the protest was initially withdrawn after assurances of talks with factory authorities, negotiations stalled when workers rejected management’s proposed terms to return to work.

This morning, workers from both factories resumed their protest, blocking the highway and causing significant traffic disruptions.

Md Mizanur Rahman, Superintendent of Industrial Police, Gazipur-2, said efforts were on to negotiate with the workers and resolve the situation.
