Looking for a Limpopo student on Umhlanga beach

Looking for a Limpopo student on Umhlanga beach

The 23-year-old went missing while swimming at Eastmoor Crescent on Monday.

NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said lifeguards, rescue swimmers, police and Metro officials were present.

“On arrival at the scene, NSRI rescue swimmers and eThekwini Umhlanga lifeguards launched into the surf using a Malibu rescue board and rescue torpedo buoys and searched freediving a 23-year-old man from Limpopo, who disappeared into the surf after being caught in rip currents while swimming.

“The search was joined by NSRI lifeboats. Despite extensive sea and coastal searches, there remained no sign of the missing man.”

Lambinon says it appears the man was on vacation.

“It appears that two brothers, originally from Limpopo and now living in Johannesburg, were visiting the Drakensberg while on vacation and returning to Johannesburg. They decided to go for a swim at the beach before their flight.

“A brother, aged 23, who studies at the University of Limpopo, had entered the water to swim. He appeared to be caught in the rip currents.”
