Waco Police Chief Writes First Children’s Book: ‘The Me I See’

WACO, Texas (KWTX) – Waco Police Chief Sheryl Victorian wrote her first children’s book, “The Me I See,” to inspire children to recognize that they have the ability to one day become a police officer.

“The book is not just about Olivia’s realization that she has become a police officer,” Victorian said. “It talks about some of the basic characteristics of police officers and behaviors that we would like to see, and helps kids realize that they already have many of those characteristics.”

“The Me I See” is about a young girl named Olivia who learned to become a police officer during Career Day at school. She asks the police officer who came to speak at the school if girls make good police officers. Throughout the book, Olivia discovers that she already has the characteristics of a young girl to one day become a police officer.

Victorian said her inspiration for the book came from young girls’ curiosity about female police officers.

“I love going to school and reading to the kids,” she said. “To have a young woman come to you and say she didn’t know a girl could be the police…and for me to have to answer that question: ‘Yes, you can.’ Look at me.’ Having a young woman say, “I didn’t know girls could become police chiefs” was even more inspiring.

She said women make up less than 13% of police officers across the country and less than 3% are police chiefs. She hopes the book will show children that they have the ability to become police officers when they grow up.

“It’s just to inspire them to want to think outside the box and help their community and make a difference,” she said.

Victorian said she has wanted to write a children’s book like this for a long time and hopes it will have an impact on children.

“I wanted to make sure to include some of the behaviors and characteristics that we would like to see promoted in future police officers,” she said.

“The Me I See” is now available on Barnes & Nobles And Amazon. Victorian hopes to do book signings in the near future.
