Yoon, deposed in South Korea, once again ignores his summons to appear

Suspended South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has, for the third time in a row, failed to respond to a summons to appear before the country’s law enforcement authorities, Yonhap News Agency reported Sunday.

The Corruption Investigation Bureau said Yoon did not show up to its offices in southern Seoul when summoned, Yonhap reported. Yoon had ignored previous summonses of December 18 and 25.

It is increasingly likely that the office will issue an arrest warrant for Yoon, Yonhap said.

The corruption bureau is investigating Yoon for unexpectedly imposing martial law on Dec. 3, before lifting it hours later.

Since then, South Korea has been plunged into a political crisis. The National Assembly voted to impeach Yoon on December 14, and the Constitutional Court initiated the necessary procedures to make a final decision on whether the Assembly’s vote was constitutional.

Yoon recently defended his controversial decision to impose martial law by saying he was acting to protect the nation. The opposition accuses him of violating the constitution.
