Delhi Police has stepped up efforts to maintain law and order on the city’s roads, cracking down on major traffic violations such as illegal parking, wrong-way driving, over-speeding and violation of railway signals. Despite extensive awareness campaigns and repeated warnings, many Delhi residents continue to flout road rules, leading to a significant increase in fines and penalties. As a result, thousands of motorists will soon face heavy financial penalties for their failure to comply with the highway code.

Over 4.7 Lakh Challans issued for illegal parking

Official figures reveal that the Delhi Traffic Police has issued over 4.79 lakh challans for illegal parking this year. Additionally, over 10,000,000 notices were sent regarding inappropriate parking. Between October 1 and November 22 alone, 62,042 challans and over one lakh notices were issued for parking violations. The fine for illegal parking is ₹500 per violation, which means the total amount to be collected for such violations is expected to exceed Rs 24 crore.

Repression against wrong-way driving and traffic lane violations

The Delhi Police has also taken strong action against motorists who violate lane discipline. So far, 4,634 vehicles have been penalized for failing to follow designated lanes. The fines for these offenses are Rs 1,000 for private vehicles and Rs 10,000 for commercial vehicles. Additionally, the police issued 98,929 challans for driving in the wrong direction, with each violation attracting a hefty fine of Rs 5,000.

Towing and Additional Penalties for Parking Violations

To better enforce traffic rules, Delhi Police towed 1.73 lakh vehicles this year due to illegal parking. Two-wheelers have to pay a towing fee of Rs 200, while cars and jeeps are charged Rs 400. In addition to parking violations, 1.29 lakh vehicles, including commercial and passenger vehicles, have been penalized for breaching entry ban and time limit rules, with fines of up to Rs 20,000 per vehicle.

A stark reminder: pay the price for traffic offenses

As Delhi Police continue their crackdown on traffic violators, the financial consequences for those who break the law are becoming clearer. With millions in fines and notices already issued, police are on course to recover a substantial sum. Delhi residents are now facing a harsh lesson that ignoring traffic rules will not only disrupt the flow of city roads but also incur a big cost.
