BMW, which already stimulates the future of the green automobile thanks to its solid electrification strategy and pressure for wider durability, has also experienced sustainable materials.

The manufacturer’s objective was mycelium, a root structure of fungi which consists of wire -shaped filaments called hyphery.

Mycelium is one of the most adaptable materials on this list, due to its deceptive resistance, its biodegradable nature and its ability to be cultivated in personalized shapes.

The material has applications covering the construction of textiles to the automotive sector, where BMW used it to build interior components.

The manufacturer has also collaborated with mycelium startups like Ecovative Design, to explore ecological alternatives to conventional materials such as plastics and mosses.

BMW previously celebrated this research and innovation through events like BMW Materia, Presenting the phenomenal possibilities of mycelium.

The BMW initiative is one of their broader efforts for sustainability in their production process, including efforts to reduce carbon footprints and use renewable resources.
