10 Common Cybercrime Tips

1) TRAI phone scam

Some cybercriminals may pose as Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) officials and threaten to suspend your mobile services, alleging illegal activities or non-compliance with KYC.

However, it should be noted that TRAI is not suspending mobile services. Only telecommunications companies can do this.

2) Parcel stuck at customs

Some scammers will call and claim that a package intended for you is stuck at customs because it contains illegal goods.

They could then demand a fine.

These numbers should be reported immediately.

3) Digital Arrest

Unfortunately, this is a very famous scam these days, where scammers pretend to be police officers and threaten to question you on false accusations of criminal activity.

It should be noted that the police do not actually carry out any type of digital arrest or online interrogation.

4) A family member arrested

In this type of scam, scammers call and claim that a family member or loved one has been arrested.

They then ask for payment.

It is therefore important to check with your family members before taking any action.

5) Get rich trading fast

There are several advertisements, sometimes on social media, that tout high returns on certain specific stock market investments. These are most likely potential scams.

6) Easy online tasks/jobs for big rewards

Some scammers may claim to offer large sums of money for you to do simple tasks, but they will also ask for a security deposit, which is how they scam their victims.

Almost all of these easy money schemes are scams.

7) Lottery in your name

If you receive a message or email stating that you have won the lottery and also asking for your account details or a security deposit, it is a scam.

8) Wrong money transfer

If you receive a call or message requesting a refund, claiming that an incorrect amount was credited to your account, it’s likely a scam.

Always check these types of transactions with your bank.

9) Expired KYC

Some scammers will call or use links to request KYC updates, often posing as bank representatives.

It should be noted that these are scams since banks do not call or send links for KYC updates.

10) Generous tax refund

Some other fraudsters may pose as tax officials and ask for bank details.

It should be noted, however, that the tax authorities already have your bank details and do not need to ask for them. They usually communicate directly.
