The Cochin Corporation has been ordered to file an affidavit on steps taken to clean polluted drains in Kochi and to prevent dumping of plastic or other waste into the drains, which would inevitably clog rivers and backwaters.

The local self-governing authority has been ordered to file an affidavit regarding producers of bulk waste – including hospitals – and details of those engaged in the collection and disposal of all types of waste, including biomedical waste. Details were also sought on how this waste disposal is monitored.

The Court also directed the amicus curiae to file a brief report on the issue, particularly on the most polluted drains in the state.

“We request the amicus curiae to submit a brief report on the areas to which the attention of the Court should be drawn regarding the accumulation of dirt, plastic and other waste in the sewers,” he said.
