War of the Worlds Siberia reveals stunning gameplay for the first time

For many, HG Wells’ War of the Worlds would have been the first time the concept of alien races and interplanetary invasions entered their minds. The classic novel from the late 19th century was so far ahead of its time, that it inspired many other media and was made into several films and television shows. However, when it comes to War of the Worlds games, we haven’t seen one since 1999. Well, The War of the Worlds in Siberia is looking to change that, and the third-person action adventure game has just given us our first look at some gameplay – and boy, does it look good.

Set in 1896 and covering the same Martian invasion as Wells’ book, The War of the Worlds in Siberia shows us a new interpretation set in Imperial Russia. It follows the journey of survivors as they attempt to escape the ancient capital of Petrograd to the eastern part of the Russian Empire and will be a linear journey consisting of several hand-crafted levels, rather than being an open world experience or semi-open.

THE action game will feature third-person combat and “dozens of weapons”, including cap guns and the Maxim, which is one of the first automatic machine guns ever made. There will also be stealth mechanics in play – if War of the Worlds in Siberia manages to emulate the close-quarters tension of that basement scene from the 2005 film, so I’m all about it. “Space puzzles” will also arise in your adventure that you must solve.

This all sounds great, but seeing it in action is even better. Today’s gameplay reveal really surprised me, if I’m honest. Visually, this game looks excellent – the character models look great, the environments are beautifully lit and detailed, and the third-person combat looks really punchy and heavy (in a good way).

We also get our first glimpse of a hulking walker, with tentacles glowing a menacing red and screaming this deep, haunting tone. This trailer really makes me scratch my head and wonder “why did it take so long to get a new War of the Worlds game?” » 1999 brought us both a RTS game and a vehicle combat game the same year, but nothing since. I really can’t wait for Siberia to end this long wait.

Unfortunately, there’s still no release date for War of the Worlds in Siberia, but developer 1C Game Studio has confirmed that the game will be coming to Steam. A store page will go live in the near future, and you can then wishlist it.

While we wait to see and hear more about this amazing project, here are some other incredible ones single player games which we highly recommend. A lot of best space games can provide an extraterrestrial hit if that’s also what you’re looking for.
