Kohl’s closes stores in the Bay Area

(WKBN) — Two major retailers have announced store closures to start the year. Macy’s and Kohl’s stores across the country will soon be closed, according to press releases issued Thursday by the two companies.

Several of these include locations in the Bay Area. Here’s what you need to know.

Macy’s closes more than 60 stores

New York-based Macy’s will close 66 stores in nearly two dozen states as part of its “Bold New Chapter” strategy, describing the soon-to-be-shuttered locations as “no moving forward” locations.

The new strategy, initially announced in February 2024, aims to return the company to sustainable and profitable sales growth. In a press release issued Thursday, Macy’s announced plans to close approximately 150 underproductive stores in total over a three-year period.

Although it is among the impending closures, Macy’s notes that the Hillsdale Furniture location in California closed in 2024 and the furniture company moved to a full location nearby. Furniture locations in Mission Valley, California, as well as Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines and South Dade, Florida, have also moved to nearby Macy’s locations.
