Buying guide for the used BMW Z4 (Mk3, 2019-date): a worthy rival to the Porsche Boxster

Buying guide for the used BMW Z4 (Mk3, 2019-date): a worthy rival to the Porsche Boxster

New brake fluid is required every two years at £63, but as all engines are chain driven there are no cam belts to replace.

Most Z4s cost over £40,000 new and are therefore subject to a £410 road tax premium, while insurance is likely to be high, with entry-level models in Group 30 ; the M40i moves up into Group 38. Fuel bills should be acceptable, however, with four-cylinder models capable of around 38 mpg, while the M40i is closer to 33 mpg.

Reminders

So far, BMW has recalled the Z4 Mk3 four times. The first occurred in December 2019, as some of the first Z4s were equipped with faulty engines; a replacement unit was the cure, but only 53 cars were affected.

Broken tie rods in the front suspension were the cause of the second recall, in August 2020; more than 4,500 cars built until April 2019 have been covered. The third recall took place in November 2020 because a fuel tank weld might fail; six Z4s manufactured between June and October 2019 were targeted.

The latest campaign took place in March 2021, due to substandard brake discs on 3,700 cars built in January and February 2021.

Satisfaction of Driver Power owners

The Z4 never appeared in our Driver Power surveys on new or used cars, because they are not selling in large enough numbers. BMW generally doesn’t do better than mid-table; Last year the i3 placed 13th out of 75, but its other cars were 46th (Series 3), 47th (Series 5) and 72nd (Series 1). He also placed four cars in 2024, this time between 18th and 36th place. BMW also came in mid-table (14th) in the 2024 Brand Survey.
