Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane was automatically suspended from his duties as a member of the House of Representatives after a complaint was filed against him on Sunday.

The Kaski District Attorney’s Office (DGAO) filed a complaint against Lamichhane with the Kaski District Court on Sunday, accusing him of cooperative fraud, organized crime and money laundering.

Lamichhane was automatically suspended from his position as a legislator in accordance with section 27 of the Prevention of Asset (Money) Laundering Act 2008.

“Any official or staff of any organized institution established under the laws in force or any public servant shall be deemed to be automatically suspended for the period he is detained in accordance with this Act or until the case filed against him in accordance with in article 22 be judged. settled,” states article 27 of the law.

A senior official at the Federal Parliament Secretariat also said Lamichhane would be suspended from his duties as a lawmaker with the registration of the case accusing him of money laundering. “His position as a lawmaker will be suspended after the letter arrives,” the official said.

Lawyer Kamala Kafle of the Kaski District Court told Setopati that Lamichhane had been automatically suspended from his duties as a lawmaker.

“Rabi Lamichhane’s position as a legislator will be automatically suspended in accordance with Article 27 of the Prevention of Asset (Money) Laundering Act,” Kafle said. “This does not need to be mentioned in the indictment. We will write to the relevant body in accordance with the law.

The DGAO has claimed Rs 278.94 million for money laundering, Rs 33.76 million for cooperative fraud from Lamichhane.

Lamichhane was arrested at the RSP party office in Kathmandu on October 18.
