Cher reveals her name was wrong this whole time

Cher revealed that the name on her birth certificate has been incorrect this entire time.

THE American pop superstar and actress78 years old, born in 1946, shared this story from the beginning of her life in her new autobiography.

After Cher’s paternal grandparents fled to America after the Armenian genocide of 1915, his father John Sarkisian married actress, singer and model Georgia Holt.

Holt had just turned 19 when she married John in 1945, and she gave birth to Cher just weeks before her 20th birthday.

However, on this happy occasion, there was an almighty name mix-up that Cher only became aware of at the height of her fame in the 1970s.

In the first part of her new autobiography, Cher: The Memoir, she revealed that the name on her birth certificate – Cheryl Sarkisian – did not match the name Holt gave her.

“I thought my name was Cherilyn,” she wrote, explaining that when a nurse asked her for a name, Holt gave a detailed reasoning.

“My mom said, ‘Well, Lana Turner is my favorite actress and her little girl’s name is Cheryl.’ My mother’s name is Lynda, so what about Cherilyn?

However, years later – around the time of her divorce from Sonny Bono – Cher decided to change her legal name and made the first discovery.

“I was shocked to discover that I was officially registered under the name Cheryl. (So ​​I) asked my mother, “Do you even know my real name, Mom?” »

Holt, who was in her 40s at the time, apparently demanded to see the birth certificate before justifying that she was in a lot of pain and cheekily asked Cher to “give her a break!”

Her mother and father divorced when Cher was just 10 months old, only to remarry a few months later, 20 years later.

Holt died recently, in 2022, having lived to the age of 96. She remarried (and then divorced) five more times and gave birth to another daughter, Georganne.

After marrying and divorcing six times, Holt met his partner Craig Spencer in 1976. They never married but stayed together until his death.

She had been battling health issues for months prior, with Cher tweeting: “Sorry I’ve been MIA (missing).” Mom has been sick from time to time. She has just been released from the hospital – she was suffering from pneumonia. She’s better.

However, in November 2022, she simply tweeted “Mom is gone.”

After her mother’s death, Cher responded to a concerned fan on social media platform X, promising them she was fine.

”I’m not sad. We freed her. She no longer screams in Pain 24/7. She’s her happy, funny, crazy, beautiful self,” adding, “She’s been so sick for so long. The day she died, she didn’t look like my crazy, beautiful mother.
